Find out which is the first band to be confirmed for festival

The first band has been confirmed for the Glastonbury 2009 festival – Liverpool four-piece Major Major.

The band have confirmed their involvement in next year's event after winning the RockStar Bands competition, held in the nearby village of Pilton earlier this year.

The band have won a recording session at Peter Gabriel's studio as well as a spot at the festival.

The four-piece, whose music you can hear at myspace.com/majormajorband, played at the Glastonbury party gig with Franz Ferdinand and The Ting Tings last month.

It is yet to be announced which Glastonbury stage Major Major will perform on at the festival, which is set to take place on June 26, 27 and 28 next summer.

Breaking with tradition, tickets for the next Glastonbury festival have gone on sale already, with festival-goers able to put down a deposit to reserve their place for the 2009 event.

It doesn't matter who plays Glastonbury, you should be getting tickets regardless of what's on the bloody Pyramid stage. That should be no more than 1% of your consideration of why to go. It's not Reading, that's a music festival - Glastonbury is for a bit of everything - performance, cinema, chilling out, eating and drinking AND music. It pains me to think why it's been nigh on impossible to get enough tix for all your mates to go because 80% of the people are going because they want to see bloody Radiohead or Coldplay. You should be going there and coming back raving about Manu Chao or Gil Scott Heron or Ozomatli. You already know what the bloody Verve sound like already. And what's with all the bloody flag waving. It's like last night of the proms there nowadays. Pah!

no more than 1% consideration of who's on? well, i hope bros and slipknot are the only two acts playing if you book your tickets based on that premise.apart from the excellent major major, of course.

if it was 4 days of camping with my mates and i could still hit the cider in the late morning and stay nicely out of it while watching jugglers and the insanity of a good glasto, i wouldn't give 2 sh*ts who played on the main stage, bros and slipknot included. more fool anyone who has the festival mixed up with Reading or V.

bergkamp72 you are just too cool for school! Heaven forbid anyone should confuse Reading or V with Glasto! - Glad to see music snobbery os still alive and well!

got a feeling David Gilmour will be headlining one of the days, seeing as he was reported to have been knocked back last year.

It doesn't matter who plays. Like people have said already, if you go to Glasto purely for the bands who are playing, maybe you shouldn't be going at all - stick to the music festivals. Glasto is a festival of contemporary arts and if you don't like that, tough shit.

Good lord Bergkamp have you got sand in your crack or sommat?! your pompus, arrogant music snobbery makes me smile, you state, more fool anyone who has Glasto mixed up with Reading or V, why, surely the person who paid for the ticket to which ever festival is entitled to do what they wish to do for the duration of that festival. it is not your call to make a judgement on how people spend their festival, so buck up buddy and chill out, cos im sure you wouldnt everyone at the festival watching the jugglers and there to be a empty pyramid stage cos that would spoil your late morning cider induced out of it-ness.wouldnt it?! berk! see you down the front for The Fall no doubt!

am glad a couple of the people on here know what i'm on about. i assume the rest pack up their white trainers, St George's Cross flag and camp out near the Pyramid stage every June and buy what NME and XFM tells them to. ps it's "pompous" not "pompus" ;-)pps i have CDs by all the artists I named, my point was just that i have discovered some great music at Glasto over the years and it saddens me that people would only consider going to such a great festival because they could stand at the back of that field and watch a note perfect Radiohead concert. you might as well stay at home and watch it on the BBC. ppps am glad at least it provoked some debate. well done everyone who took the time to think about what they want from a music festival.

bergkamp72 has got it spot on. There are times when i've been to Glastonbury and not watched one single band all weekend. Its not just about the music, there is so much more going on that you'd be a fool not to find some form of enjoyment. Relax, chill out, expand your mind.

bergkamp...usualy what i want from a 'music festival' is good music...hense why i never go to glasto as leeds festival is where its at. Good music good laughs good drinking times. Not confusing things with people swallowing fire or juggling balls. Music is what i want from a music festival nothing more nothing less, its just a bonus if they are good bands afoot....this is just my opinion though of course.

Don't people get excited when someone mentions that the bands on the main satge may not be the best thing about Glastonbury..? For me the main stage is the worst stage - too many people camped out all day, too many people chatting, bands too far away, safe music etc. etc. I wouldn't have minded watching Jay-Z last year but I wouldn't have missed CSS and Battles headlining the Park Stage for anything...! and that's just the beginning of the night's festivities.... Ha ha

yay...a diversity battle. what are the rules? do you want to go through the ages, across genres? shall we do it by who recorded it, or by what language it's sung in (assuming it has lyrics), are you counting mixtapes and that sort of thing too? bring it on. give me your top ten.

Music snobbery rules and it comes with age and taste! And as for Glasto headliners if the EMAs are anything to go by one will be Rick Astley! Forget RickRolling bring on the Mr BlobbyRolling lets take the EMAs beyond a joke!

props to markblewing and caponee too. i absolutely don't have a prob with going to a music festival based upon who's playing (interpol, strokes and jane's addiction at Reading in 02, sonic youth, mudhoney, babes in toyland, nirvana etc in 91), i just wouldn't base a decision on whether to go to Glastonbury on who was playing. last year's glasto...well Jay Z and Brian Jonestown Massacre both played the pyramid, and previously we've seen de la soul, the breeders, nick cave, echo and the bunnymen all playe it, so it ain't ALL bad ;-)

are bros still going? luke goss is mainly playing villains in guillermo del toro films and craig manages or managed Pink. arguably he did the best out of it, but the other 2 probably got the girls.

As soon as me and my other half knew that we could put a deposit down we did. No questions asked. Neither of us have been before but we both have faith in the festival from what we see and hear especially from friends who have been before. I really can't wait and don't give a crap what the line up is. I just want to pop my glasto cherry and have the greatest 5 or so days of my life.
